Pothole Program

How Potholes Form
Potholes form over time when water makes its way below or into paved surfaces. The water weakens the pavement because it causes erosion and because the pavement expands and contracts during the freeze‑and‑thaw cycle.

Our crack sealing program helps prevent water from making its way below paved surfaces.

How We Repair Potholes
Hot patch is used in spring, summer, and fall when temperatures are routinely above 32 degrees. Hot patching lasts longer because it compacts and bonds better with the pavement.

Cold patch is used only in the winter when temperatures stay below 32 degrees, usually from Thanksgiving through mid to late March. Asphalt cannot be made during freezing temperatures, so cold patch is the only option. It does not last as long but allows us to fix potholes until a proper repair can be made.

How Many Potholes Do We Repair?
The City fills about 60,000 to 70,000 potholes each year. These repairs help keep roads smoother and for drivers and their vehicles. We prioritize pothole repairs based on how severe they are, the type of street they are on, and public requests.

How You Can Help
Davenport has more than 1,300 lane miles of streets. You can help us keep them in good condition by reporting potholes.
