(May 8, 2026) The dual turn lanes east and west of the intersection are complete. Watch for changing travel patterns as work continues. Intersection improvements are estimated to be complete in August.
(March 27, 2026) Intersection improvements on E 53rd St and Utica Ridge Rd will begin on May 30.
Road work will include:
- New dual left-turn lanes on eastbound 53rd Street
- New dual left-turn lanes on northbound Utica Ridge Road
- New traffic signals to improve traffic flow and safety
- Pavement upgrades
- Sidewalk improvements for ADA compliance
- Installation of a new median on Utica Ridge Rd
A review of traffic volumes, delays, and crash history at this location showed that the current turn lanes can’t keep up with the number of vehicles using the intersection. The new turn lanes will help keep traffic moving more smoothly with fewer backups and less frustration. This is also expected to decrease rear-end collisions and crashes involving left-turning vehicles.
The Iowa Department of Transportation awarded the City $500,000 in Traffic Safety Improvement Funds to support this project.
Travel through the intersection will be maintained in all directions for the duration of the project. Initial work will focus on the northern curbside lanes of E 53rd Street and northbound Utica Ridge Road. Transient lane reductions are likely throughout the project.
We will provide updates as the project moves into its next phase.
Construction is expected to be completed in August. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve this busy intersection.
