The Fire Prevention Bureau consists of three primary (3) branches: Code Enforcement, Fire investigation, and Public Education.
INSPECTIONS & Code Enforcement
The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for enforcing
fire codes through building inspections and plan reviews with the purpose of reducing the hazard of fire in the city of Davenport.
Duties of the
Bureau include plan review and inspection of new construction and
remodels of occupancies, new business licenses, the renewal of/new
liquor licenses, and the hazardous materials team. The FPB also
oversees each fire company's annual inspection of all commercial
properties, schools, and public buildings.
Fire Investigation
Davenport's Fire Investigators are also DFD firefighters and fire
officers responsible for investigating the origin and cause of all fire
incidents and explosions that occur in the city. Investigators prepare
detailed fire investigation reports and NFIRS reports (National Incident
Fire Investigation Reporting System) for these incidents.
Investigators are responsible for the collection of evidence and for
providing testimony in court in the event they are subpoenaed. Some
fire investigators are also certified law enforcement officers that work
cooperatively with the Davenport Police Department to make arrests in
the event a fire was determined to be arson.
Public Education
The Fire Prevention Bureau has a fire officer (lieutenant)
that oversees all the life safety programs the Davenport Fire Department
offers.
The education officer's responsibilities may include
determining the need for and implementing life safety programs, and the
scheduling of life safety events such as: stations tours, fire safety
talks involving the smoke house, school talks, parade participation, and
community service events.
