Police Officer Testing Process

The information below highlights some of the testing components of our hiring process.

Physical Testing:

The physical fitness test established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Council consists of three events:

  • One Minute Push Up Test: The push-up event measures the endurance of the chest, shoulder, and triceps muscles. Recruits will have one minute to do as many push-ups as they can.
  • One Minute Sit-Up Test: The sit-up event measures the endurance of the abdominal and hip-flexor muscles. Recruits will have one minute to do as many sit-ups as they can.
  • 1.5 Mile Run: The 1.5 mile run is used to assess your aerobic fitness and leg muscles' endurance. Must be completed without any physical help. Recruits are being tested on their ability to complete the course in the shortest time possible. Although walking is authorized, it is strongly discouraged.

Written Exam Testing:

The Police Officer Select Test (POST) written exam will cover four sections

  • Arithmetic
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Grammar
  • Incident Report Writing

You will need to score at least 70% on each individual section to pass this exam.

Background Investigation & Polygraph

A thorough background investigation is completed on all applicants who pass both the physical ability and written exam components of our process. Background investigators will investigate your background comprehensively, interview past and current employers, references and family members. You will also submit to a polygraph.

Oral Interview

Applicants who successfully pass the background investigation, will be invited to interview with the Chief and his command staff. This is the final testing component prior to a possible offer of employment.

Post-Offer of Employment Testing Requirements

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with the City of Davenport will be required to successfully complete pre-employment physical, drug test, psychological testing, and physical ability tests.
